Monthly Profile: Marc Bourbonnais, Co-founder, Modus FX
Interview with Marc Bourbonnais (FX96), Graduate of the Film and Television Program, Co-founder of Modus FX.
1- Which company do you work for and what position do you hold there?
I am president and co-founder of Modus FX. My main tasks are to manage the company, ensure a link between our boards of directors, executives and investors; manage the company’s financing and assume the role of executive producer on our ongoing projects. Modus FX has completed more than 20 film and television projects, the most recent one being “Mr. Nobody”, which is currently in theatres in Europe.
2- Why did you choose a career in 3D?
During my engineering studies at the Polytechnic, I was really involved with the student life. The internal television network had acquired a 3D animation station that was connected to editing stations and I basically learnt to prepare animated sequences as I went along, to the great detriment of my studies … This was in 1993.
3- In what way did the NAD Centre help you start a career in 3D?
At that time (we’re talking of the mid 90s), it was very difficult to train for a career in visual effects and even harder to obtain a job in this field. The NAD Centre enabled me to develop important contacts with professionals and companies in the field, while polishing my 3D skills of course.
4- What is your career path?
Following my studies at the NAD Centre, I got a contract with Société Radio-Canada to work on “Branché” for several months, a show dealing with new technologies. Then, I obtained a permanent position working on visual effects for film with Hybride, where I worked for 10 years (I held the position of 3D Technical Director in my final years there). I co-founded Modus FX in 2007 of which I am president.
5- What do you enjoy in your profession and why?
It’s tough to get bored in the world of visual effects! Each year brings with it its share of new technologies and new creations that push the limits of this art form. Also, business management is a daily challenge, but the best advantage of being a manager is being able to build your own team. We have built a fantastic team, which never ceases to amaze me and which I respect tremendously; thanks to them, it’s a real pleasure to come to work everyday.
6- What are the qualities needed to succeed in your field?
In terms of visual effects, talent is obviously important, but it is also crucial to know how to communicate with the various teams we are a part of. No one is alone in his/her corner; one completes certain elements on a project then passes it on to the next person; so, it is essential to communicate one’s needs, situation, expectations and results properly.
7- Do you have any advice to give to students who wish to make a career in 3D?
Take your time to climb the rungs and keep a positive attitude as you perfect your skills; a career is not built in a few months. Learn how to respect your colleagues and how to listen to your superiors; this is an industry based on teamwork, constant learning and the desire to surpass oneself.
